Saturday July 20
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Orchid seeds are unlike any other plant's seeds. Called "dust seeds," they are so tiny that they lack the nutrient content to start the germination process. In the wild, orchid seeds must rely on fungi to obtain this food, an exceedingly rare event. However, under laboratory conditions, we can provide the seeds with nutrients via plant culture media and achieve nearly 100% germination. Students will be able to work in Fairchild's Orchid Micropropagation Lab and will learn the sterile laboratory techniques necessary to cultivate orchids. Each student will also be able to take home a flasked native orchid. Due to space in the Lab this class is limited to 6 students.
