The key to building beautiful gardens in South Florida relies heavily on choosing the right building materials for your application and applying common sense construction techniques to your garden design. Miami landscape designer, Carlos Somoza, will present both natural and man-made building material alternatives including locally quarried and imported stone, precast pavers, and tropical hardwood decking. Samples of materials will be available during class and a list of local building material suppliers will be provided to students.

This three hour class will be spent in a practical session of the whip and tongue grafting technique; a challenge to master but has one of the highest rate of success. To many gardeners the art of grafting is a fascinating subject to learn. Dr. Ledesma will show participants the process of growing rootstock, nursery beds and finally in established orchards. There will be hands on practice on grafting an avocado tree. Students must bring your own grafting knife. The class takes place at the Fairchild Farm, located in Homestead.
